Mindfulness simply means present moment awareness. Jon Kabat-Zinn, founding director of The Center for Mindfulness (CFM) at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, defines mindfulness as: “Paying attention in a particular way: On purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.”
Kabat-Zinn developed the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program in 1979, and MSBR is now offered in medical centers, hospitals, universities and clinics around the world, including the CFM at UMASS, the UCSD Center for Mindfulness, Duke Integrative Medicine, the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center for Integrative Medicine, and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
There is also now a new a Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA.
